| Akwaaba! Welcome to Street Girls Aid! |
Street Girls Aid (S.Aid) is a Ghanaian non-governmental organization that assists girls and young mothers who are living on the streets of Accra. S.Aid promotes the psychological, social, and physical well-being of these street children and strongly advocates for their rights.
S.Aid recognizes that each child is unique and the services offered reflect the complex needs of living on the street. Programs range from skills training, early childhood care, health education, and literacy classes.
Programs are administered in several different environments. A House of Refuge situated in Achimota, Accra serves as a drop in center for female street children as well as a temporary home for pregnant street girls. At the refuge, girls can seek safe shelter and learn proper infant care. In addition, S.Aid employs 10 social workers that conduct daily visits to six different locations around Accra where street girls are most prevalent. These social workers establish contacts with the street girls and offer the girls sound advice, a reliable resource for help, and, if necessary, referral to appropriate care. Six daycare centers servicing 750 children have been established where young children are properly cared for and provided the education necessary to enter primary school while their mothers work on the streets.
New children arrive in Accra everyday only to become street children. S.Aid, along with its partner, Catholic Action for Street children (CAS), utilizes all available resources to respond to the needs of this growing population.
